The Garden of Dreams – ”Finnish short animation today” screening presents a comprehensive overview of current Finnish short and art animation. The films reveal to the viewer the diversity of Finnish animation field, the richness of expression, and the directorsä personal approaches to to both large and small subjects. The rhythm and visual language of the film reveal common features typical of Finnish animation, but at the same time each one is very dufferent, reflecting its director. The Garden of Dreams – ”Finnish short animation today” screening has been curated by animation director and producer Mika Koskinen incollaboration with Finnish Institute in Japan and the Finnish Animation Guild.

Hound tells the story of a young child who is desperately trying to survive in a dark, abandoned city. Huge dog as her only comfort the duo not only need to find food but also have to escape the monster that is trailing on them. In the finale the child needs to make a decision to either stay in the darkness or attempt to escape the tight grip of it.

Nico is a young reindeer who dreams of joining Santa’s squadron like his father. To be accepted as a member, he must pass a selection test, but then, a talented girl named Stella appears and challenges Nico to a tough race. The two continue to compete evenly, but Stella betrays Nico’s trust by stealing the sleigh loaded with Santa’s cargo and disappearing. In fact, Stella is part of an enemy group, and behind this lies the unknown past of his fathers. With Christmas in danger of being canceled, Nico and his friends go in search of the sleigh.
